The CBA Festival of Archaeology 2024: July’s Family Saturday

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Council of British Archaeology and the annual Festival Of Archaeology, Celtic Harmony hosted a very special Family Saturday in the July: The Archaeology special. It was wonderful to welcome so many families to site for what was our busiest Family Saturday event yet!

After a slightly hazy morning, the sun broke through the clouds, welcoming the visitors onto site. After an introductory talk and safety briefing in the Chieftain’s Roundhouse, attendees got stuck into the volunteering tasks of the day.

First they helped to replenish the wood and foliage for the den building area before moving on to help us tidy an area of the forest where we are planning to open up a new path.

Our group of volunteers turned out to be so productive that we were able to clear the ground and line out the new path within an hour! It was great to see the forest transformed so spectacularly by such a strong team.

Then it was on to the archaeology activities! We were joined on site by Stephen Vincent, a trustee of the organisation and one of our longest standing Conservation Volunteers.  Stephen shared part of his extensive personal collection of Stone to Iron Age artefacts for both young and old to handle in an interactive tool display.

Both adults and children alike were able to experience the magic of handling artefacts that survived millennia in the Earth before being recovered.

The children then got their own chance to experience the thrill of archaeological discovery when they were challenged to retrieve their own ‘artefacts’ from our sand pit. They worked superbly as a team and successfully excavated every hidden object.

We want to thank all our visitors for attending and hope to see them again. We will be running Family Saturdays on the third weekend of each month up until November 2024. To book for future events, click here.
