The Prehistory Centre
The Prehistory Centre
The Prehistory Centre showcases the ages of Prehistory through artefacts, reconstructions, and landscape photo backdrops. A hub of learning, this spacious indoor facility is open every weekend throughout the year, free of charge for visitors to discover more about their ancient ancestors.
See day-to-day artefacts within the Stone to Iron Age Exhibition on display, showcasing original artefacts spanning over a million years from a Mammoth tooth to an Iron Age coin. Explore the Palaeolithic Cave inspired by the Lascaux Cave paintings found in France in the 1940s and the Gower peninsula rock art. Then enjoy looking around the Trading Post Shop to see the different souvenirs you can buy.
The Prehistory Centre is the perfect place to learn more about our ancient heritage at any point of your visit and is an ideal open plan venue for conferences or private events, with adjoining toilets and washrooms (see our accessibility page for all facilities).

The exhibition brings together a variety of objects, including 20,000-year-old animal bones, early flint tools, Bronze Age items of status, and increasingly domesticated tools and objects of the Iron Age.
To enjoy and learn more about these prehistoric artefacts, and appreciate our ancestral link to the natural world, come and visit the exhibition which is open to the general public at weekends.

Temporary Exhibition
Until April 2026 we will be displaying as part of our Stone to Iron Age Exhibition a collection of Iron Age pottery, kindly loaned to us by St Albans Museums Service.
The artefacts include cooking pots, cremation urns, and coin moulds. They were all found during archaeological investigations at the site of Verulamium, a Roman town which had developed from an earlier Iron Age settlement, near to modern-day St Albans.
Make sure to visit us and see these objects before they are returned.

The Prehistory Centre was completed in Spring 2022 with thanks to grants from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the kind support of local and national trusts (see our supporters page).

From visitors
The backdrops and exhibitions have encouraged me to teach this period in more depth and detail. I feel much more confident teaching this period in the future.
It was a jaw dropping moment for the children! The hands on experience always sticks in childrens’ minds.
